Season 4 Group stage wrap-up
As the hype for playoffs builds up let’s [quickly] review the group stage of the season.
Overall, 46 players made it to the end of the tournament – 9 masters, 9 minions and 28 recruits. 22 players either failed to appear at all, or were disqualified due to not showing up for their games, or just forfeited the season because of IRL issues and other reasons. Lets compare these numbers against previous seasons:
Season 1 – 69.4%
Season 2 – 62.5%
Season 3 – 70.8%
Season 4 – 67.6%
Numbers are close, with Season 2 standing out, maybe that’s because of the league recruits expansion with lots of new people not planning their gaming schedule ahead. This is also the thing in Season 4 with a whopping 2 divisions added. Hopefully, all those who left prematurely will get back stronger with this new experience behind them.
Another interesting detail, this time from results department: we have 3 players on 100% win ratio – Happy (having 1 strike due to a match against Omnom not played), WaRRyKeR (again having 1 strike) and kazu (clean score). Previously this feat was achieved by JuiceBox in Season 3 and Lorrydriver in Season 2. Season 1 lacks flawless victories whatsoever.
Now let’s check how distinct divisions played out.
Masters division was much stronger than even before this time, with FiveAces back in full-time action (comparing to his semi-hiatus previous season), and a new wave of Minions joining the fray – Smitty, Orb, SirCake and Blackened.
Smitty really shined in the end with a strong away game vs Barf, introducing a neat prepared trick of dropping a bag of rocket soldiers onto a fresh ore patch using chinook, which resulted in a massive eco blow for Barf and leaving him on 3 ore trucks. This resulted in away game win for Smitty, which placed him above FiveAces in standing and leaving 5A without a playoff spot and outside of prize zone again.
Orb was close to get into contention but lacked some points in important games. Still he got “best of the rest” 6th.
SirCake and Blackened haven’t shown the most they’ve got and need to kick it up a notch if they plan to survive the next season. Ever-present Masters player Anjew is still rowing too.
Finally, we are losing Han and Abcdefg30 from Masters – struggled to find enough gaming time they both couldn’t live up to their past results.
Minions division was once again dominated by freshly promoted overpowered Recruits, this time also adding SoScared and Medium Tank as first ever Masters dropouts. With WhoCares, Raishiwi and Medium tank forfeiting, Happy, Omnom, Doomsday and SoScared made it into the Top4 with Mentats just behind them on 5th.
Lucasss, T and NoobMapMaker (NoobMapMaker is actually the only player attending all 4 seasons in the same Minions division and will repeat this feat next season once more) made formidable opponents for the top bunch and will surely give new Recruits a warm welcome in the form of tough matches and lost points.
Kuba is going to be relegated back to Recruits, only snatching a single point from Lucasss; still he provided some fun in Minions, always experimenting on unconventional tactics and picking KOTG.
Remember that we will have two Minions divisions next season, so the heat of confrontation will only go up here.
Forgive me for not separating Recruits, but that was already leading to a big post, so got it hacked a bit.
Finally, Recruits. Some familiar faces there from previous iterations, but mostly rookies of course. We are certainly to see a new wave of good players emerge from this season’s recruits massacre with 16 people promoting to Minions (and not forgetting the Path of the Hidden Master of course, but more about that later). Names like jvk, mechANIC, Chewey and kazu already heard of in the community (kazu being the author of several RAGL maps and a former Masters player) as well as new rising stars – Sotsch, bullE, WaRRyKeR and eskimo (the latter was considered the hot favourite for the Recruit Champion title pre-season, but then kazu made a late entrance into the League, and eskimo unexpectedly lost the first group place to WaRRyKeR) will all get more attention next season definitely.
wippie, Zaqzorn and Shpooky were all victims of the overwhelming IRL presense in its various forms and haven’t performed at 100% as a result. Wishing them luck to sort everything out for the next season and show some good play, as well as Digital Jihad (who actually produced a very strong play, but hasn’t had enough sportsmanlike attitude to setup/play his matches through the season), 3.Lucian, Neth, Lord of War (1 point short from reaching top4), corrode (who is to be praised for making this website as it is now) and already mentioned ex-Minions players. And of course many others I haven’t mentioned yet.
Remember, the season is actually not over yet. And even more, it’s far from over for 13 players in the tournament – Top4 Masters and Top4 Minions deciding who takes the league bounty, and 4 top Recruit players fighting through the Path of The Hidden Master, with SirCake waiting the fittest at its end. Smitty and Gatekeeper also need to run a tiebreaker to set who starts playoffs from third place.
Path of The Hidden Master structure and matches were already advertised; exact fixtures for playoffs are still to be set, but certainly to be played in the coming weeks, if not days. So be vigilant and don’t miss on them being streamed live (or VOD if you happen to get those at the uncomfortable time/date)!
Possible streamers include SoScared, FiveAces, corrode, ZxGanon and netnazgul (those are stream links). Follow the discord for the news on that, as this column won’t be a fast enough source to announce events (but then maybe it will be).
