Season 5 Week 6
This week was rather quiet on the games around the league, decreasing the tempo from the “rest” week which was the most active to date. Still, we got some games in, and some decisive ones too.
Polaris 0-2 ZxGanon (Recruits Bravo, R06):
This was a highly anticipated match due to performance both players had shown through the first half of the season, going with 100% win rates, thus making this the title derby.
First map was Borrowed Time, unexpectedly picked by polaris as he mostly picked River of Gold for his prior matches. Early game started with two unlucky moments for him, first restarting a pillbox just a second before ZxGanon‘s rifle squad attacked a power plant in Lorry style (though it was pulled out too early, leaving power plant on 5% HP), and then placing a pillbox on the other side of the base at the same time as rocket APC drop was incoming. Luck turned when polaris caught a lone MCV on the approach to one of the middle ore patches. This forced ZxGanon to launch an attack to buy time for a double MCV backup. Then came a clear misplay by polaris, engaging a fortified tesla position.
This was coupled with another attack on the right expansion of ZxGanon which did much more damage, but lacked firepower to fully raze it. Also, polaris managed to grab top ore patch, putting his opponent into dire situation of not having enough eco to continue. Still, ZxGanon barely held onto his right expansion and also had teched to air, so army assets and initiative were favouring his side. Attacking on multiple fronts won polaris a great deal of map control, but not having enough forces on either front, failing to follow with economy development (polaris hasn’t moved his original ore trucks for a good portion of time) and then a primary barracks point not reset from an invaded position all led to his demise in this game.
Second game on Badger Hills again saw polaris going 1ref and ZxGanon opting for a safer yet slower double-ref build. This time pillbox was ready for a rocket drop, but still one truck lost and several infantry crushed by APC. Yet due to 1ref start, polaris had better eco to set hold on the natural ore patch and driving into the middle, at the same time razing the natural refinery of ZxGanon. Massive fight for the midspot was going on for several minutes, eventually ending in a win for polaris. At this point, ZxGanon just went straight on tanks+rifles spam from a double War Factory coupled with aggressive MCV movement and tesla coils, not even having a single rocket (well, maybe 2 or 3) and not building any tech. Unfortunately for him, polaris hasn’t realized the army composition properly and continued to spam pillboxes which haven’t worked much against that. ZxGanon hit a zero-eco situation at some point due to not having a proper functioning expansion anywhere, but by this time it was already looking over for polaris due to massive lack of assets and sides open for any kind of invasion. ZxGanon capitalized with a pure tank force destroying polaris‘ main.
Anykeyich 0-2 mechANIC (Minions, R06):
MechANIC got the upper hand in Minions russian derby and equalized to Anykeyich on points, both having 3 now. Both not being particularly active of late, mechANIC and Anykeyich concentrated on army buildup, teching and razing oil derricks on ShadowfiendII. Early second expansion for mechANIC wasn’t really developed and was moved, but then the MCV was successfully used as a bait to wipe out the incoming army from Anykeyich. Still even having two expansions against one, Anykeyich wasn’t really paying much attention to tech, only running several V2s and Yaks around, whereas mechANIC got a german chrono and did a tank drop onto enemy main, and they hadn’t returned back due to their point of origin being occupied by infantry. Anykeyich only got a tech center at 20min mark, hasn’t even used any T3 to lose it a minute later due to somewhat bad placement at the front. By this time GPS was already up for mechANIC, and without IC there was just nothing much to provide for Anykeyich. Further game on Race Tracks resolved faster, with Anykeyich initially having better economy, but then receiving a ref block by ranger and light tank and forgetting to start on the army production for a minute. That minute was just enough for mechANIC to raise a decisive lead on army mass.
FiveAces 0-2 LorryDriver (Masters, R06):
FiveAces probably played too defensive in this matchup. You don’t even see him playing double-ref that much, especially on a map like Badger Hills. This somewhat played ok to fend off the grenrush, but in every other aspect Lorry was just better. Trying to play macro game and missing a chunk of ore mining somewhere around 4:00-5:00 hasn’t helped FiveAces either, losing to a superior asset count. Second game was just more of the same, with FiveAces rushing towards the mid gems on Face-off and ignoring oil derricks completely. Though he allowed Lorry to set a basepush nearby, and it was over in a minute.
As usual – some huge matches will probably be delayed in Masters, Unano will continue to stomp Minions, and some new stars suddenly rising in Recruits.
Most of the attention will however to be drawn to Allies Overhaul tournament on Saturday which will showcast Orb’s work on reinvigorating Allied factions and making them less static and more proactive. This balance pack or a part of it can make it into the official release somewhere in the future, so you can have a closer look on what’s to come if you’re interested.
